Downloading

Download the Companion software from the Install site (netmrinstall.org.uk/input.html). The link will point to a zip folder which you need to download. In order to do this, you must also have a zip opener app on your tablet, many of these free apps can be found on the Play store.

Once the zip and the zip opener are downloaded, open the zip opener app and extract the zip file. This will then give you one file which should be called [eu_netmr_input[current version].apk].

Upload Methods

If an internet connection is not available, then the file will be stored and uploaded at a later time. The upload is started by pressing the [Upload] button on the Home page. This will upload all files that have not already been uploaded. After a file is uploaded, it is renamed and “uploaded” is added to the name. All files associated with a project, including any uploaded files, can also be uploaded using the [Select] button and choosing a project. This function is useful if any files go missing or if an extra copy of files is required after a project is finished.

Installing

To install Companion, click on the .apk that you have just extracted from the zip file. This will open Android’s install dialog box. Follow the steps that Android has set out and at the last step, press ‘done’ instead of ‘open’.

Next, go into the App Info (Found in Settings>Apps>Companion Input) and click on [Permissions]. The two permissions that you must set on are ‘Contacts’ and ‘Storage’. ‘Storage’ allows files to be managed and ‘Contacts’ allows the app to get your username to name the files properly. The other two permissions that can be enabled on a case-by-case basis. ‘Location’ is used in interviews with GPS tracking and ‘Microphone’ will be used in recorded questions to replace verbatim questions. ‘Recorded’ questions are not currently implemented.

You are now ready to run the app.

First Time Setup

The input files and the required access credentials, and press [FTP Account]. This will take you to a new page, press [Add FTP Account] and complete the required information. The note field is simply a useful way to identify ftp sites. Once completed, choose an FTP site and press [Connect], the programme will then return to the home page. Next press [Download], this will show a list of files to download. To download a file, press on the required file. Once downloaded, press [Start Interview] and start the relevant interview. After the interview has been conducted, if an internet connection is available, it will be automatically uploaded.

Deleting Files

The [Clear Directory] button can be used to remove files saved on the system. When pressed there are two options, if the option to remove input files is used, then new files will need to be downloaded before an interview is started. Data files are also removed this way, but it is also possible to delete just data files. When data files are deleted, only the uploaded files are removed, preventing data loss. FTP sites cannot be deleted this way, they must be deleted inside the ‘ftp’ account page and can only be deleted individually.
